Section 11 also notes that letter grading represents individual courses only, not the semester GPA or the CGPA, which are reported as numbers.

The GPA formula

GPA = Σ(grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ(credit hours)

Clause 7 states it in words: multiply the grade point of the course by its credit hours to obtain total grade points, add the grade points of all the courses, and divide by the total number of credit hours of that semester.

The regulations' own worked example

CourseCredit hoursGrade pointWeighted grade points
53133.009.0
53432.306.9
54734.0012.0
55033.7011.1
57130.000.0
57231.705.1
Total1844.1

GPA = 44.1 ÷ 18 = 2.45. Note the zero: a failed course keeps its credit hours in the denominator, which is why one F moves the average so sharply.

Rounding, standing and re-registration

  • A fraction of a mark counts as a whole mark, so 64.1 and 64.9 are both shown as 65.
  • The maximum possible GPA is 4.00, and a 4 or 5-year bachelors degree needs a minimum CGPA of 2.00.
  • Students with F and D grade courses re-register with juniors, where the conditions allow, to improve the grade.

Why no percentage is shown

These regulations set the mark bands behind each letter, but publish no formula for turning a CGPA back into a percentage, so this page shows none. HEC's own table, which many Pakistani institutions adopt, is on the HEC CGPA to percentage page, and a percentage printed on your transcript beats any conversion.

Grade points, the formula and the standing rules follow the University of the Punjab's Semester Rules and Regulations for Undergraduate Studies, Notification D/6966/Acad. of 4 September 2023, approved by the Syndicate on 27 July 2023 and effective from Fall 2023. Read on 21 September 2026. Rules change; confirm with the Controller of Examinations before relying on a figure.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Punjab University grade points?

Section 11 of the Semester Rules gives: A for 85% and above, 4.00; A- for 80 to 84, 3.70; B+ for 75 to 79, 3.30; B for 70 to 74, 3.00; B- for 65 to 69, 2.70; C+ for 61 to 64, 2.30; C for 58 to 60, 2.00; C- for 55 to 57, 1.70; D for 50 to 54, 1.00; and F below 50 or absent, 0.00.

How is the PU GPA calculated?

Clause 7 of the same section: multiply each course’s grade point by its credit hours to get its weighted grade points, add them across the semester, and divide by the total credit hours. The regulations work an example where 44.1 weighted grade points over 18 credit hours give a GPA of 2.45.

Do W and FW count in the GPA?

No. A withdrawal (W) is not counted and does not appear on the final transcript; a forced withdrawal (FW) is not counted either but is shown on the transcript. An Incomplete (I) is awarded for absence from an exam and must be cleared by a special exam within one month, or zero marks are recorded.

What CGPA do I need for my degree at PU?

Section 11 states that the minimum CGPA required for the award of a 4 or 5-year bachelors degree is 2.00, and that the maximum possible GPA is 4.00.

How are fractional marks treated?

A fraction of a mark counts as a whole mark. The regulations give the example that 64.1 or 64.9 is shown as 65, which can move a course from C+ to B-.
