Why CGPA conversion matters
Recruiters, admission portals, and visa forms in many countries ask for a percentage rather than a CGPA. Schools in the Gulf, Europe, and North America may not recognise a 10-point scale at all. A CGPA of 8.5 can represent anywhere from 75% to 85% depending on the conversion formula used, so presenting the wrong percentage can cost an admission or job offer.
Formulas by grading system
| System | Formula | Example (CGPA 3.5 or 8.5) |
|---|---|---|
| HEC Pakistan (4.0 scale) | (CGPA ÷ 4.0) × 100 | 3.5 ÷ 4.0 × 100 = 87.5% |
| HEC Pakistan (5.0 scale) | (CGPA ÷ 5.0) × 100 | 3.5 ÷ 5.0 × 100 = 70.0% |
| CBSE India (class X and XII) | CGPA × 9.5 | 8.5 × 9.5 = 80.75% |
| General Indian universities | (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | (8.5 − 0.75) × 10 = 77.5% |
| Anna University | (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 | (8.5 − 0.5) × 10 = 80.0% |
| VTU | CGPA × 10 | 8.5 × 10 = 85.0% |
| Mumbai University | CGPA × 7.1 + 11 | 8.5 × 7.1 + 11 = 71.35% |
The same 8.5 CGPA produces a percentage anywhere from 71% to 85% depending on the formula. Always confirm which system your institution uses before converting.

How to use this calculator
- Choose your grading system from the dropdown. Check your transcript if unsure.
- Enter your CGPA. The calculator validates it against the maximum for that scale.
- Read your equivalent percentage in the result panel.
- Use the reference table to spot-check common CGPA values.
Choosing the right formula
For Pakistan: most HEC-recognised universities use the 4.0 scale. A small number of older or specialised institutions use 5.0. Check the top of your official transcript for the scale.
For India: CBSE students use the times-9.5 formula for class X and XII grade sheets. University students at most UGC-affiliated colleges use the general (CGPA minus 0.75) times 10 formula. Engineering students should check whether their university has its own published formula, since Anna University, VTU, and Mumbai University all use different conversions.
When to use this calculator
Use it when filling out a job application, scholarship form, or study-abroad application that asks for a percentage. Use it when comparing results with students from different universities who use different scales. For the reverse conversion, use the Percentage to CGPA Calculator. To convert to a US 4.0 GPA rather than a percentage, use the CGPA to GPA converter.
Common mistakes
Using the wrong system for your university. The most common error is using the general Indian university formula for a CBSE transcript, or the HEC 4.0 formula for a 5.0-scale university. The result can be off by 10 to 15 percentage points. Always verify the scale on your official transcript.
Assuming all employers use the same conversion. Some companies and government portals in Pakistan and India apply their own in-house conversion formula that differs from the official HEC or UGC guideline. If an application asks you to use a specific formula, use that formula regardless of what the calculator shows.
Rounding the CGPA before converting. Enter your full CGPA as it appears on the transcript, including decimal places. Rounding from 3.47 to 3.5 before converting can shift the percentage result by 0.75 points.
