Anna University grading system

Anna University is headquartered in Chennai and serves as the parent body for most engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu. The university uses a 10-point CGPA system with letter grades from O (Outstanding) at the top to U (Unsuccessful) for failure. The official conversion formula subtracts 0.5 from the CGPA before multiplying by 10, which places Anna University results slightly higher than the general Indian university formula at the same CGPA.

Formula: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.5) × 10

How to use this calculator

  1. Confirm the Anna University formula is selected in the dropdown.
  2. Enter your overall CGPA from your official transcript.
  3. Read the percentage in the result panel.
  4. Use the SGPA to CGPA Calculator first if you only have per-semester SGPAs.

When to use this calculator

Use it when applying for campus placements, government jobs, or higher education that asks for a percentage. For Tamil Nadu state government jobs (TNPSC), enter the result with a note that it uses the Anna University official formula. For overseas graduate applications, use the CGPA to GPA converter to show the US 4.0 equivalent. If you only have semester SGPAs and need the cumulative CGPA first, use the SGPA to CGPA Calculator.

Common mistakes

Using the general Indian formula instead of the Anna University formula. Applying (CGPA minus 0.75) times 10 to an Anna University result understates the percentage by 2.5 points at every CGPA level. A student with an 8.0 CGPA gets 72.5% under the wrong formula instead of the correct 75%.

Using semester SGPA instead of cumulative CGPA. The formula converts your cumulative CGPA, not a single semester SGPA. Using the final semester SGPA alone will usually be higher or lower than the true cumulative figure.

Applying this formula to colleges outside Tamil Nadu. This formula applies specifically to Anna University-affiliated colleges. Other state universities in Tamil Nadu or colleges affiliated with different central universities may use different formulas.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Anna University formula for CGPA to percentage?

Percentage = (CGPA minus 0.5) times 10. A CGPA of 8.7 gives (8.7 minus 0.5) times 10 = 82%. A CGPA of 7.4 gives (7.4 minus 0.5) times 10 = 69%. This formula is published in the Anna University academic regulations and applies to all affiliated engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu.

Why does Anna University subtract 0.5 from the CGPA?

The 0.5 offset is calibrated so the minimum passing CGPA maps to a meaningful minimum passing percentage. A student who just passes with a CGPA of around 5.0 gets (5.0 minus 0.5) times 10 = 45%, which is close to the minimum passing mark threshold. Without the offset, the same CGPA would give 50%, which would overstate the result.

What is a good CGPA at Anna University?

A CGPA of 8.5 and above is considered First Class with Distinction at Anna University, equivalent to 80% under the formula. A CGPA between 6.5 and 8.4 is First Class, equivalent to 60% to 79%. The minimum to pass is typically a CGPA of 5.0 in each semester and an overall CGPA that meets the degree requirement.

Is the Anna University formula the same as the general Indian university formula?

No. Anna University uses (CGPA minus 0.5) times 10. The general Indian university formula uses (CGPA minus 0.75) times 10. At a CGPA of 8.0, Anna University gives 75% while the general formula gives 72.5%. The Anna University formula consistently produces a slightly higher percentage at the same CGPA.

Can I use this percentage for Tamil Nadu government job applications?

Yes. Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) and most state government job advertisements accept the Anna University percentage equivalent. Use (CGPA minus 0.5) times 10 and note it is the Anna University official formula if asked to justify the conversion.
