Grading Scale

A grading scale maps a percentage to a letter, and a letter to grade points. Two scales cover most US schools and colleges: the plus/minus scale, where an Aโˆ’ is 3.7 points, and the whole-letter scale, where every A is 4.0. Both are conventions rather than national rules, so your school's handbook is the authority. Type your percentage below to see where it falls on each.

Letter grade
B+
A+ 97โ€“100, A 93โ€“96, Aโˆ’ 90โ€“92, B+ 87โ€“89 and so on down to F below 60.
Grade points (4.0 scale)

The plus/minus grading scale

Letter gradePercentageGrade points (4.0 scale)
A+97โ€“1004.0
A93โ€“964.0
A-90โ€“923.7
B+87โ€“893.3
B83โ€“863.0
B-80โ€“822.7
C+77โ€“792.3
C73โ€“762.0
C-70โ€“721.7
D+67โ€“691.3
D63โ€“661.0
D-60โ€“620.7
FBelow 600.0

This is the table most US high schools and colleges publish. Some cap the scale at A rather than A+, and some leave out Dโˆ’; either way the passing line is normally 60%.

The whole-letter (10-point) grading scale

Letter gradePercentageGrade points
A90โ€“1004.0
B80โ€“893.0
C70โ€“792.0
D60โ€“691.0
FBelow 600.0

Each letter covers ten percentage points, which is why it is often called the 10-point scale. Because there is no Aโˆ’ or B+, the same transcript usually produces a slightly higher GPA here than on the plus/minus scale.

Weighted scales: where 5.0 comes from

A weighted scale adds a bonus for harder courses (commonly +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP, IB or dual enrolment), so an A in an AP course becomes 5.0 instead of 4.0. Districts set their own bonuses and some cap the result, so a 4.6 at one school is not comparable to a 4.6 at another. The weighted GPA calculator shows the weighted and unweighted figures side by side.

Pass, fail and the grades in between

GradeWhat it usually means
AExcellent; full credit, 4.0 points
BAbove average; the floor for many honors and major requirements
CAverage; usually the lowest grade that satisfies a prerequisite
DPassing but weak; often not accepted in a major
FFail; no credit, 0 points, and it still counts in the GPA
P / NPPass or no pass; earns credit but carries no grade points
IIncomplete; usually becomes an F if the work is not finished
WWithdrawn; appears on the transcript but not in the GPA

Grading scales outside the US

Other systems do not map onto the 4.0 scale cleanly, and the honest conversion always goes through the institution's own rule:

  • India mostly uses a 10-point CGPA, and each university publishes its own percentage rule: CGPA ร— 10 at VIT and SRM, CGPA ร— 9.5 for CBSE Class 10. See CGPA to percentage (India).
  • Pakistan uses a 4.0 CGPA with letter grades set per university; see the HEC table.
  • Converting either into a US GPA is an approximation, not an official equivalence. Credential evaluators and admissions offices do their own conversion, and theirs is the one that counts.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming every school uses 90 as the A line: read your syllabus first.
  • Averaging letter grades instead of grade points weighted by credits.
  • Comparing a weighted GPA with an unweighted one.
  • Treating a converted foreign GPA as official.

The tables on this page are the widely used conventions in US schools and colleges, not a national standard: no authority sets one. Your institution's handbook decides your grades, and it overrides anything here.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage is an A?

On the plus/minus scale an A covers 93 to 96%, with A+ at 97 to 100% and A- at 90 to 92%. On the whole-letter scale an A is anything from 90 to 100%. Schools set their own cut-offs, so check your syllabus: some use 94 as the A line, and a few use 85.

Is a 4.0 grading scale the same as a 100-point scale?

No. The 100-point scale is your percentage in the course; the 4.0 scale is what the letter grade is worth when GPAs are averaged. A 93% and a 96% are both an A and both 4.0, so information is lost when a percentage becomes grade points.

What is a 5.0 grading scale?

It is a weighted scale used for honors, AP, IB and dual-enrolment courses, where a bonus is added to the ordinary points so an A in an AP course can be worth 5.0. Weighted scales vary by school district; our weighted GPA calculator lets you set the bonus yourself.

What does a 10-point grading scale mean?

Two different things. In the US it is the whole-letter scale where each letter spans 10 percentage points (A 90-100, B 80-89). In India it is a 10-point CGPA, where grade points run from 10 down to 0 and the CGPA is converted to a percentage by a university-specific rule.

Do colleges use the same grading scale as high schools?

Most US colleges use the plus/minus 4.0 scale without weighting, so an A in any course is 4.0. Many also drop the D- or the A+ from their table. Admissions offices often recalculate a high-school GPA on their own scale, which is why both the weighted and unweighted figures appear on applications.

How do I turn my letter grades into a GPA?

Multiply each courseโ€™s grade points by its credits, add those products, then divide by the total credits. Our GPA calculator does that for a semester, and the cumulative GPA calculator does it across several.
