SRM CGPA Calculator

For students of SRM Institute of Science and Technology. Its Academic Regulations 2021 for undergraduate and integrated postgraduate programmes set the grade points (O 10 down to C 5), count failed courses in the average, and define the percentage equivalent as CGPA × 10. Enter each course with its credits to get your SGPA, or every semester together for your CGPA.

SRM grade points and mark ranges

O (Outstanding)1091 – 100
A+ (Excellent)981 – 90
A (Very Good)871 – 80
B+ (Good)761 – 70

I (Incomplete)0Insufficient attendance

R 8.1 introduces this table as the letter grades and grade points “as recommended by UGC”. A student earns the credits for a course with any grade other than F, Ab or I.

The SRM SGPA and CGPA formulas

SGPA = Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σ(credits), over every course taken that semester, including the ones graded F.

CGPA averages the semester SGPAs weighted by each semester's credits (R 8.6(ii)). Both are rounded to two decimal places on the transcript.

Worked example

CourseCreditsGradePointsCredits × points
Course 14O1040
Course 24A+936
Course 33A824
Course 43B+721

Total credits = 14, total points = 121, so SGPA = 121 ÷ 14 = 8.64. Under R 8.7 that is 8.64 × 10 = 86.4%.

What an F does to the average

Because failed courses stay in the denominator and contribute zero, one F in a 4-credit course pulls the example above from 8.64 to 6.72 (121 ÷ 18). Clearing the arrear replaces the grade in a later semester, but the regulation decides how that is reported: read R 8.9 onwards for the arrear rules.

How to use this calculator

  1. Add one row per credit course and enter its credits.
  2. Pick the letter grade from your grade sheet.
  3. Leave out mandatory non-credit courses (R 8.1(a)).
  4. Read your SGPA, or enter every semester at once for the CGPA.

Grade points, the SGPA rule and the percentage formula come from the SRMIST Academic Regulations 2021 (B.Tech / M.Tech Integrated), read on 20 September 2026. Regulations change and differ between campuses and programmes; check yours with the Controller of Examinations before relying on a figure.

Frequently asked questions

What are the SRM grade points?

R 8.1 of the Academic Regulations 2021 lists O (Outstanding) 10 for 91-100 marks, A+ (Excellent) 9 for 81-90, A (Very Good) 8 for 71-80, B+ (Good) 7 for 61-70, B (Above average) 6 for 56-60, C (Average) 5 for 50-55, and 0 points for F, Ab (absent) and I (incomplete, from insufficient attendance).

How do I convert an SRM CGPA to a percentage?

R 8.7 says the equivalent percentage of marks for a CGPA "shall be calculated as follows: Equivalent Percentage of marks = (CGPA * 10)". A CGPA of 8.5 is therefore 85%. There is no subtraction of 0.5 and no multiplier of 9.5 in these regulations.

Do failed courses count in the SRM SGPA?

Yes. R 8.6(i) says the sum runs over all courses taken in that semester, "including those in which the student has secured F grades". This calculator counts F at 0 points, and treats Ab and I the same way because R 8.1(c) groups all three as a failure to complete the course. Mandatory non-credit courses are excluded by R 8.1(a), so leave them out.

How is the SRM CGPA itself calculated?

R 8.6(ii) averages the semester SGPAs, each weighted by that semester’s credits. Entering every course from every semester in one list gives the same figure, because both are credit-weighted averages of the same grade points. Results are rounded to 2 decimal places.

Does this cover all SRM campuses and programmes?

The regulations read here are the 2021 B.Tech / M.Tech (Integrated) regulations of SRMIST Kattankulathur. Other SRM campuses and programmes publish their own regulations, and the grade table can differ. Check the regulation for your own programme before relying on a figure.
