Anna University GPA Calculator

For B.E. and B.Tech. students admitted from 2021-22 to Anna University's non-autonomous affiliated colleges and University Colleges of Engineering. Every number here comes from the Affiliated Institutions Regulations 2021: the grade points in clause 15.1, the GPA method in clause 15.5 and the percentage rule in clause 15.5.2. Enter each course's credits and letter grade; the GPA updates as you type.

Anna University R2021 grade points

Letter gradeGrade pointsMarks (absolute grading)

A+ (Excellent)981 to 90
A (Very Good)871 to 80
B+ (Good)761 to 70
B (Average)656 to 60
C (Satisfactory)550 to 55
U (Re-appearance)0Below 50
SA (Shortage of Attendance)0none
WD (Withdrawal)0none

Grade points are from clause 15.1; the mark ranges are the table for absolute grading. Most theory courses with more than 30 students who pass are graded relatively, so their cut-offs can differ.

The GPA formula

GPA = Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σ(credits), over the courses you cleared in the semester. Clause 15.5 adds that U grades are excluded, so a course you have not yet cleared adds nothing to either side. For CGPA, use every cleared course from the first semester onwards.

Worked example

CourseCreditsGradePointsCredits × points
Course 14O1040
Course 23A+927
Course 33B618
Course 43U0excluded
Course 52C510

Cleared credits = 4 + 3 + 3 + 2 = 12. GPA = (40 + 27 + 18 + 10) ÷ 12 = 95 ÷ 12 = 7.92. Counting the U course's 3 credits by mistake would give 95 ÷ 15 = 6.33, which is not how the regulations compute it.

From GPA to percentage

Clause 15.5.2 converts the CGPA on the consolidated grade sheet into a percentage as CGPA × 10, so a final CGPA of 7.92 is 79.2%. The Anna University CGPA Calculator does this conversion and explains which rule applies to older regulations.

How to use this calculator

  1. Add one row per course and enter its credits from your curriculum.
  2. Pick the letter grade from your result or grade sheet.
  3. Read the GPA and the credits counted. Courses graded U, SA or WD are left out automatically.
  4. For CGPA, enter the courses from every semester together.

Common mistakes

Counting U grades as zero. The regulations exclude them, so including them understates your GPA.

Averaging semester GPAs. Semesters with more credits carry more weight. Enter the courses, or use the SGPA to CGPA Calculator with each semester's credits.

Using R2021 points at an autonomous college. Autonomous colleges publish their own regulations; see the REC Grade Calculator for one example.

Based on Anna University's Affiliated Institutions Regulations 2021 (approved version with amendments), read on 20 September 2026. Your official GPA is the one on your grade sheet.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Anna University R2021 grade points?

Clause 15.1 of the Regulations 2021: O (Outstanding) 10, A+ (Excellent) 9, A (Very Good) 8, B+ (Good) 7, B (Average) 6, C (Satisfactory) 5. U (Re-appearance), SA (Shortage of Attendance) and WD (Withdrawal) carry 0 points. A course is passed with any grade from O to C.

How is Anna University GPA calculated?

GPA = the sum of (course credits x grade points) divided by the sum of credits, taken over the courses you cleared that semester. Clause 15.5 says U grades are excluded from GPA and CGPA, so a failed course adds neither points nor credits until you clear it. CGPA is the same calculation across all semesters.

Does a U grade lower my GPA?

Not directly. Under clause 15.5 a U grade is left out of both the top and the bottom of the calculation. It does keep you from earning those credits, and the course counts once you clear it, with the grade you then earn.

How do I convert my Anna University CGPA to a percentage?

Clause 15.5.2 of the Regulations 2021 says the CGPA on the consolidated grade sheet is converted as Percentage of Marks = CGPA x 10. A CGPA of 8.25 is 82.5%. The Anna University CGPA Calculator on this site does the same conversion and explains the older regulations.

Why does my grade not match the mark ranges?

Clause 15.1 uses relative grading for most theory and theory-integrated courses when more than 30 students pass, so grade cut-offs are computed per course. The fixed ranges (O 91-100, A+ 81-90, A 71-80, B+ 61-70, B 56-60, C 50-55, U below 50) apply to laboratory courses, project work and courses where 30 or fewer students pass.

Does this work for autonomous colleges or older regulations?

No. Autonomous colleges such as Rajalakshmi Engineering College set their own regulations, and R2017 or R2013 students follow earlier rules that we have not checked. Use your own college’s regulations in those cases; the REC Grade Calculator covers REC.
